An officer with the West Fargo Police Department died Tuesday after suffering an undisclosed "medical emergency."
West Fargo Chief of Police Denis E. Otterness announced the officer's death around 2:45 p.m. at a hastily organized news conference.
Otterness said the officer was on duty and within the police station when they suffered the medical emergency.
Officers and members of the West Fargo Fire Department rendered aid, and the officer was taken to the hospital, where they were pronounced dead.
"No further information will be released" until next of kin is notified, Otterness said.
The Cass County Sheriff's Office will be handling emergency calls for the immediate future, he added.
The announcement came after the city requested media to come to to City Hall to discuss an "incident," without offering any additional details. On the scene, reporters noted an ambulance and stretcher.
