West Virginia man sentenced to 70 months after robbing Moorhead bank

Robert Vaughn Evans, 53, was sentenced to 70 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release.

A West Virginia man has been sentenced to almost six years in prison after robbing a bank in Moorhead.

Robert Vaughn Evans, 53, was sentenced to 70 months in prison followed by three years of supervised release Tuesday in U.S. District Court.

According to court documents, Evans robbed Gate City Bank, located in a Moorhead grocery store, on May 1, 2019.

Evans handed the bank teller a note that read, “I have a gun.” He told the teller he did not want “bait” money and reached to his back waistline, indicating he had a gun.

The teller gave Evans $3,860 before he put it in a bag and ran away on foot. The incident was captured from multiple security camera angles.

Evans also robbed a bank in Niagara Falls, New York on Feb. 13, 2019. He issued similar demands from the teller before he was given $786.

As part of the sentence, Evans will also have to repay the two banks the amounts he robbed.
