What next for Lieutenant Governor? Duluth mayor's race a possibility

As Yvonne Prettner Solon's days as lieutenant governor wind down, she says her political future might include a bid for mayor of Duluth.

Prettner Solon said Monday the mayor's office in the Zenith City is "the only political job I ever aspired to," the Associated Press reports.

Prettner Solon announced early this year that she would not join Gov. Mark Dayton in his re-election campaign. That means she'll be leaving state government in a few weeks as Dayton's second-term running mate, Tina Smith, prepares to become lieutenant governor.

A couple of months ago, Duluth Mayor Don Ness revealed he will not run again when his second term ends next year.

As the News Tribune notes, Prettner Solon succeeded her husband, Sam Solon, as a state Senator from Duluth before she was elected lieutenant governor. Before that she served on Duluth's city council.

But she tells MPR News in those elections "... I just happened to be in the right place at the right time, and knew that it was something that I should run for, and it worked out for me.”

Prettner Solon says she's planning a vacation in Arizona after she steps down as lieutenant governor, but tells the News Tribune she'll make her her intentions clear by the end of April.
