What's on Delta's runway? Purple uniforms

Sorry – they're actually 'Passport Plum.' And their designer is famous for Project Runway.

More than 60,000 Delta employees will be sporting a new look within the next couple of years – one that comes from designer Zac Posen, who may be best known for his contributions to the TV show Project Runway.

The Atlanta-based carrier that handles the bulk of Minnesota's air traffic unveiled its new style at a fashion show Tuesday (you can watch the video on Delta's Facebook page).

Instead of the current navy blue and red color scheme, the "Fly Me to the Moon" collection features purple, red, and gray.

Or at least that's what we thought until Delta clarified that its employees will be wearing Passport Plum, Cruising Cardinal, and Groundspeed Graphite.

Delta will not really be flying to the moon anytime soon, but the song that was a hit for Frank Sinatra in 1964 seems to be an indicator of the look Posen is aiming for.

Delta says it's paying homage to "the heritage and iconic design from decades past," while the Star Tribune says the collection plays off the nostalgia and luxury of mid-century air travel without breaking from the industry's conservative dress.

The uniforms will be made by Land's End, Delta says.

It's been 10 years since Delta last changed the look of its frontline employees. KARE 11 notes it comes just a month after Delta's rival American Airlines updated its style for the first time since the 1980s.

Delta says outdoor workers will have various weather-appropriate options to choose from in the collection.

Posen told the New York Times he wears a suit and tie even when he's walking the dog. But he knows not everybody does and says he shadowed Delta workers on the job to learn more about their needs.

Now that his designs have been unveiled, the plan is that about 1,000 Delta employees will try them out in 2017. The other 59,000 or so will start wearing them the following year, after any wrinkles have been ironed out.
