What's open and closed on Thanksgiving Day in Minnesota

A guide for those who won't be spending the whole day in a turkey coma.

It's Turkey Day, which for many of us means a familiar routine: eat, nap, repeat.

But for one reason or another, not everyone will spend all of Thanksgiving alternating between copious amounts of mashed potatoes and couch comas. And there's nothing more annoying than trying to do normal, every-day stuff on a holiday and finding everything is closed.

So before you head out the door, here's a run-down of what's open and what's closed on Thanksgiving Day.

  • Federal and state offices: Closed.
  • City offices: Most will be closed.
  • City parking meters: It depends on the city, but many parking meters won’t be enforced Thursday, including in Minneapolis and St. Paul. That means free parking – including on the day after Thanksgiving.
  • Public transportation: It’ll be running, but service may be limited to a Sunday schedule in some cities. Metro Transit buses and light rail in the Twin Cities will run on a Sunday schedule for Thanksgiving; Park and Ride routes will not operate.
  • Schools and universities: Most public schools and universities will be closed.
  • Libraries: Closed.
  • Emergency services: Police and fire services won't be affected.
  • U.S. Post Office: Closed. Delivery services like FedEx and UPS will also be closed.
  • Banks: Most are closed, but reopen on Black Friday.
  • Garbage and recycling pickup: Likely won't have normal service – check with your trash collectors. Waste Management is not operating, neither are collection services from the City of Minneapolis.
  • Grocery stores: It varies from store to store – some will have reduced hours (Whole Foods will be open 8 a.m. to 3 p.m., Target and Walmart open late at 6 p.m.), while others (Aldi, Costco, Sam's Club, Publix) won't open at all.
  • Pharmacies: Most CVS stores will be open on Thanksgiving Day, but hours may vary from store to store. Same with Walgreens.
  • Liquor stores: Closed – liquor stores are legally barred from being open. Seriously, here's the statute regarding the "intoxicating liquor."
  • Shopping malls: Mall of America is closed, but other malls including Southdale Center, Ridgedale Center, and River Hills Mall in Mankato will open late around 6 p.m. Here is our list of which stores will be open – and which will be closed – this Thanksgiving.
  • Movie theaters: Most major movie theater companies, including AMC theaters, will be open.
  • Restaurants: A lot of major chains will be open, including Applebee's, Buca di Beppo, and most fast-food locations. Family-owned restaurants may vary.
  • Convenience stores/gas stations: Generally open regular hours on Thanksgiving Day.
