What's open and what's closed on Presidents Day?

It's George Washington's birthday ... again!

Monday is Presidents Day, a day to celebrate George Washington's birthday.

The third Monday in February is also used to celebrate all the other presidents – with major retailers slashing prices on electronics, furniture, clothing and more.

But it's also a federal holiday, so a lot of things are closed or have different hours (as always, check with your local retailer to make sure it's open). Here’s a list:

  • Federal and state offices: Closed.
  • City offices: Most are closed – that includes Minneapolis and St. Paul city offices, and Minneapolis 311.
  • City parking meters: Most parking meters won’t be enforced Monday, including in Minneapolis and St. Paul. That means free parking. There are some exceptions, including on the U of M campus.
  • Public transportation: It’ll be running, but service may be limited to a Sunday schedule in some cities. Metro Transit in the Twin Cities will run on a normal schedule.
  • Schools and universities: Most public schools are closed, however the University of Minnesota is open.
  • Libraries: Closed.
  • Emergency services: Police and fire services won’t be affected.
  • U.S. Post Office: There’s no mail on Monday, and the post offices will be closed, too. Delivery services like FedEx and UPS will still be making deliveries, but it'll likely be expensive if you want to send anything.
  • Banks: Most are closed.
  • Garbage and recycling pickup: It may not have normal service – check with your trash company. If you have City of Minneapolis trash service, it’ll be on as normal.
  • Grocery stores: They’ll be open.
  • Shopping malls: Open.
  • Liquor stores: Most will be open.
