With hundreds of metro-made beers to choose from, Vita.mn, a Twin Cities entertainment guide, has taken the difficult task of compiling a list of the best Minnesota brews. Among the best of the best, the list is broken down into five categories – hoppy, dark, light, seasonal and others.

Among the top performers: Surly Furious (hoppy); Northbound Smokehouse Porter (dark); Steel Toe Provider (light); Surly Wet and Fulton Libertine (seasonal); Indeed Midnight Rider and Surly Coffee Bender (other).

Three Minnesota brewpubs were honored at this year's Great American Beer Festival in Denver last week, Twin Cities Business reports. St. Paul's Summit Brewing Company, Fitger's Brewhouse in Duluth and Minneapolis Town Hall Brewery each took home a piece of hardware.

Meanwhile, a University of Minnesota researcher is among an international consortium of scientists mapping the genome of barley to produce better beer, according to redOrbit.com. The research is meant to help in breeding barely that is more resistant to drought and pathogens.

The results are published in the journal, Nature.
