Which 4 Minnesota companies made the 'Best Employers in America' list?

Which Fortune 500 companies are the best places to work?

An analysis by Business Insider ranked the top 50 and put four Minnesota companies on the list.

Xcel Energy, St. Jude Medical, Mosaic, and Medtronic were included.

Business Insider combined several measurements to come up with its rankings. Salary was gauged in a few ways. Companies were also rewarded for high job satisfaction, low stress, schedule flexibility, and meaningful work.

Using numbers collected by the salary information company PayScale, Business Insider gave the greatest weight in its formula to the median salaries of experienced employees – those who have been with the company for five years or longer.

Twin Cities Business has a look at the particulars of the four Minnesota companies that were ranked. In terms of overall median salary utility company Xcel Energy and medical device makers St. Jude Medical, and Medtronic were all listed at more than $80,000 a year. Mosaic, a fertilizer maker based in Plymouth, was just over $72,000.

Of course it's entirely possible – some might say likely – that the country's best employers are not Fortune 500 companies at all.

A couple of best-employer-in-Minnesota lists that came out last summer were broken into categories for small, mid-sized, and large businesses.

The Star Tribune has commissioned a study of the state's top 100 workplaces for each of the last four years. 19 companies have made the list each year. In the results published last June the number one spot among small businesses went to Market360, a St. Louis Park marketing and tech services company. The mid-size winner was Minneapolis ad agency Periscope. Financial services firm Edward Jones led the big businesses.

Minnesota Business came out with its own list of the state's 100 best companies to work for. Their top spots went to Goff Public, Stone Arch Marketing, and Anytime Fitness in the small, medium, and large categories, respectively.
