A man has been charged with the fatal shooting of his girlfriend's ex, who came to their home to drop off children to visit.
Rodney Velho, 44, of E. 16th Street in Minneapolis, has been charged in the Sunday murder of a 31-year-old man identified by the initials K.L.
K.L. was dropping off his children at the apartment of their mother, who is Velho's current girlfriend, in the 11800 block of 80th Avenue in Maple Grove.
The mother and Velho had been drinking to celebrate her birthday, and at some point during the celebration she told Velho that her ex, who was the father of her children and who had custody of them, was dropping by with the children for a scheduled visitation.
According to a criminal complaint, Velho said he was fine with this, and when the victim arrived he and Velho were initially "getting along fine."
But at some point, the pair got into an argument in the bathroom, prompting Velho to pull out a handgun and shoot the 31-year-old, who staggered out of the bathroom and fell to the ground. Velho then shot him two more times.
The mother said she was calling police, at which point Velho fled the apartment.
The mother told police that her ex was unarmed and that Velho had no reason to shoot him.
After he was arrested, Velho said he "should have just walked away" from the argument, and told police during interview he believes he shot the victim 6-8 times.
