After battling cancer throughout her 17 years on earth, Lakota Plafcan has gone through more hardship than most teenagers.

So what she didn't need was a callous thief breaking into her family's car when she was in hospital for chemotherapy.

The teenager has recently lost her hair because of the treatment, so had been saving money to buy a wig at the Mall of America she could then wear to prom, according to a posting on the Prayers for Lakota Facebook page.

This money was stolen, along with her cellphone and iPad that contained all of her pictures, after someone smashed through the truck's window as it was parked outside the Children's Hospital of Minnesota in Minneapolis on Thursday.

"I just feel sorry for the people that stole it and I am praying for them," Lakota told KARE 11 from her St. Cloud home. "I don't even want my purse back or the iPad, just my pictures. They mean everything to me."

The news station reports that Lakota had overcome lymphoblastic leukemia, only to then diagnosed with a rare kidney cancer that required one kidney to be removed. She has also had part of her colon taken out due to colon cancer, while cancer has also destroyed her ovaries.

The money for the wig will now be provided by the cancer kids fund at the hospital, but Susan Sencer, the medical director of the cancer and blood disorders program at the hospital, said she hopes the thief returns the iPad.

"Lakota wants to thank you all for the prayers and concerns," a posting on the Facebook page said. "Like she says it is only material things, it just sadden her about the pictures that can not be replaced."
