Widow of fallen pond hockey player identifies his cause of death

The widow of the man who passed away at the North American Pond Hockey Championships last month has identified his cause of death.

Kate Riebe tells WCCO that her husband, Gregory C. Riebe of Crystal, died of an undiagnosed genetic heart condition. The 46-year-old collapsed after competing in a game at the Lake Minnetonka tournament.

Kate told the station that her husband was athletic and health conscious, having participated in marathons and soccer as well as hockey.

Authorities couldn't identify the cause of death at first, but the Excelsior fire chief quickly dismissed any possibility of chest trauma – such as a blow to the chest – that might have occurred during the games, the Star Tribune reported.

Following the death, the community rallied around Riebe's young family – within days of his passing, an online fundraising campaign garnered over $10,000 to help his wife and children.

Now that stands at nearly $55,000, and the Excelsior Brewing Company will host a fundraiser and celebration of Greg Riebe's life on March 8.
