Winona State student remembered; co-workers found her tangled in machinery

Friends and supporters of Winona State University student Brooke Baures gathered at a candlelight vigil Wednesday to pay tribute to the 21-year-old, two nights after she was found dead in the restaurant where she worked.

The Winona Daily News reports audio from 911 calls reveals a distraught employee of WingDam Saloon and Grill in Fountain City, Wisconsin, first told a dispatcher she'd discovered the scene but was afraid to look more closely to see if it was Baures (right) who was trapped in the restaurant's dumbwaiter.

The newspaper says the caller returned to the phone after a co-worker had taken a closer look and said “It’s her. We need someone here like ASAP.”

The dumbwaiter is a food service elevator used to deliver food and drinks from the kitchen to the restaurant's second floor, where a banquet was underway.

Fountain City Police Chief Jason Mork tells the Daily News Baures “was found trapped inside the entirety of the device. To explain more ... would require an extremely graphic explanation.”

The investigation continues and an autopsy is pending, but Mork tells the newspaper there's no indication a crime was committed.

Baures was a senior from Cameron, Wisconsin, and was majoring in social work. She was a standout gymnast who had won All-America honors.

Winona State coach Beckie Rolbiecki told the Daily News that while Baures was a sparkplug of a competitor, she "had a magnetic personality and a smile that would light up the gym.”
