The St. Paul Winter Carnival's Medallion hunt has come to an end. According to the Pioneer Press, the Medallion was discovered on Thursday afternoon.

Steve Worthman found the charm at Snail Lake Regional Park in Shoreview.

Worthman, 52, of St. Paul will receive the full $10,000 prize – $5,000 for turning in the medallion, $2,500 for having a registered St. Paul Winter Carnival button and $2,500 for having all five published clues.

Worthman has been an avid medallion hunter over the years. He has become known to other hunters as "Mappy" or "Map Guy" because he has published a map book showing treasure hunters the details of every Ramsey County park.

The guide was even highlighted in a 2003 LA Times piece about the medallion hunt.

"They pore over worn copies of the Treasure Hunter's Guide, a book that maps every tree, every dumpster, every memorial bench in every park in St. Paul. (Steve Worthman, an avid hunter who wrote the guide, spent five years on it. "I'm not normally the kind of guy who engages in obsessive behavior. Except for this," he said, shortly after putting out his second edition in 1999).

The hunt kicked off Sunday, with thousands of people looking through the parks of Ramsey County for the medallion and a chance to win the money.

Clues in riddle form were released each day up until Worthman discovered the medallion on Thursday, in several forms.

Medallion seekers could find the clues:

  • Through a Treasure Hunt app, which launched last year for both iPhone and Android
  • Posted online at TwinCities.com/treasurehunt around 11:30 p.m. each day
  • Clues in scrambled form could be found an hour earlier
  • Daily in the St. Paul Pioneer Press (early editions sometimes were released before 11:30 p.m.)
