Winter Carnival medallion found in Como Park

Bitter cold didn't deter treasure hunter Benjamin Haselman. He found the $10,000 St. Paul Pioneer Press Treasure Hunt medallion Monday morning in Como Park, the newspaper reports.

The newspaper says Haselman discovered the gold-colored puck while digging for it with a hoe. The prize was sewn into a pair of blue jeans buried in about 8 inches of snow in an area of the park that had already been picked over by other hunters. The park was the site of much digging over the weekend, the newspaper reported.

The treasure hunt for the medallion has been a tradition of the St. Paul Winter Carnival since 1952. The Pioneer Press publishes cryptic clues each day, all of which are now explained here.

It was the eighth time the medallion has been found at Como Park, the Star Tribune reports.

In other carnival news, ice carving and snow sculpture awards have been announced. Ice carvers Tom Schiller from Hastings, Rob Graham from Minneapolis and Trevor Pearson from Eden Prairie split a $2,000 first prize for their creation “Fishing to Win."

A group called Sculptors in Sync won first prize for their snow sculpture “It’s Bee-ginning to Look a Lot Like Christmas.”
