Downtown Minneapolis's skyline briefly resembled the inside of a snow globe Monday morning as big, fluffy flakes fell, but little of it was expected to accumulate – less than an inch in most places around the metro, WCCO reports.
The National Weather Service says it could be 2 inches in areas of southern Minnesota, and up to 3 inches in the southwest:
And there's another chance for wintry precipitation later in the week. The metro likely will get rain mixed with snow Thursday, the National Weather Service says, perhaps in advance of the Thursday afternoon commute.
But cheer up, winter-weary Minnesotans - Sunday will be warm, with a high in the 50s expected in the metro, and in the 40s in the days after that, The Weather Channel reports. Marshall, in southwest Minnesota, could hit 59 on Sunday, the National Weather Service says.
This weekend, "Those stubborn snow piles in your yard will be screaming like the Wicked Witch of the West ('I'm melting!')" MPR's Paul Hutter says.
That'll be a nice change of pace. This has been a winter that keeps on giving. Temperatures plunged to the 20s below zero in International Falls the last two nights.
And Duluth has now set another cold record. The low temperature there dipped below zero on Saturday and Sunday morning, the 73rd and 74th days this “cold season” that the low temperature went subzero, the Duluth News Tribune reports. The previous record for a single extended winter season (from the end of one summer to the start of the next) was 72, set in 1874-75, the newspaper reports.
Tuesday is expected to be cold: High of 22 in the Twin Cities and Rochester; 20 in Duluth; 16 in Bemidji and Hallock; and 29 in Worthington in southwest Minnesota.
