Winter weather snarls another commute; April snow record set in Duluth

Roads were in poor condition in many areas of Minnesota Friday morning after a spring storm dumped snow in much of the state.

Drivers found yet another messy, slow commute in the Twin Cities. The west metro got more than a foot of snow, KSTP reported. Thirteen inches fell in Zimmerman, St. Cloud got 12.3 inches and Chaska saw nearly 12 inches overnight, KSTP reported.

A very long list of schools were closed or delayed around the state.

The National Weather Service says 22 inches of snow had fallen in the Lake County community of Two Harbors, with 20 inches at Lake Nichols in St. Louis County, MPR reported. MPR has other snowfall totals from around the state.

Duluth Wednesday night set a new all-time snowfall record for April, shattering by several inches the old mark of 31.6 inches in 1950, the News Tribune reported.

Power outages were reported in the Northland.

Snow records fell in St. Cloud, too.

One person was killed Thursday in what was believed to be a weather-related accident on Interstate 94 near Highway 95. The State Patrol said Jonathon Pohlen, 16, of Houlton, Wis., died in the crash.

At Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, at least two dozen flights were canceled and a number of others were delayed.

So is spring ever going to come? Not in the very near future.

It'll be sunny Saturday with highs in the low 40s, although strong sun will melt a lot of the fresh snow, KARE 11 reports.

Temperatures could hit 50 by next week, short of the 60-degree normal for April in Minnesota, Star Tribune reported. Meanwhile, check out images from the Pioneer Press of what – we can hope – was the final snow storm of the winter.
