A northeastern Wisconsin woman is fighting for the return of her dog after it ran away and was adopted by another family, the Green Bay Press Gazette reports.

Susan Heezen, who is deaf and uses sign language to communicate, said the dog has learned some basic sign language and helped with daily tasks, including alerting her when people came to the house, the newspaper reports.

The 5-year-old dog named Bear wandered away in March in Heezen's small rural community near Denmark, Wis. In an effort to get it back, Heezen contacted the Brown County Sheriff's Department and placed an online ad, the Press Gazette reported.

The dog, without any identifying tags or microchip, ended up 23 miles away at the Lakeshore Humane Society in Manitowoc, and the animal was adopted after an eight-day waiting period. Privacy laws prevent the humane society from disclosing the dog's new owners, the Press Gazette reports. But Heezen says she is not giving up an effort to find some way to arrange for the dog's return.
