Wisconsin Assembly considering bill to legalize rubber duck races

Rubber duck racing in Wisconsin is apparently no lame duck issue.

The Associated Press reports the Wisconsin Assembly will vote Thursday on approving a bill that would effectively legalize rubber duck races in the state.

The issue came up when the Wisconsin Department of Justice reportedly ruffled its feathers at the village of Mishicot, saying rubber duck racing amounts to illegal gambling.

Wisconsin Rep. André Jacque (R-De Pere) told the Badger-Herald that he wasn't happy about the way the issue came up for vote. The races are generally put on by nonprofit organizations as fundraising events.

"It's harmless fun that people can participate in," Jacque told the paper. "I don't think it's appropriate that people are complaining about good people (working) for a charity cause."

If passed, the law will create an exemption for rubber duck races. Minnesota and Michigan already have similar laws on the books.

The AP says Wisconsin has such rubber duck events as the "Ducktona 500" in Sheboygan Falls and the "Lucky Ducky Derby" in Menomonee Falls.

If you've never experienced a rubber duck race in person, you can get a sense of what it's like in the video below.
