Wisconsin State Trooper, bank robbery suspect killed in shootout
A Wisconsin State Patrol trooper and a suspect in a bank robbery were both killed in a shootout Tuesday evening in the city of Fond du Lac, about an hour north of Milwaukee in the eastern part of the state, according to Fond du Lac Police Chief William Lamb.
According to the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel, the trooper was following the suspect's vehicle about 5:30 p.m. when the two exchanged gunfire.
There are no other suspects at large and no danger to the public, Lamb said at a news conference late Tuesday. No further information was released about the trooper or the suspect.
The suspect matched the description of a man who was being sought in connection with a bank robbery earlier in the day, according to the Associated Press.
WBAY reports that a Fond du Lac bank was robbed about 4:30 p.m. The robber got away with an unknown amount of cash.
Another bank in the area was robbed a few hours earlier in the village of Wausaukee, which is about 130 miles north of Fond du Lac. It's not yet clear whether the two robberies are related, according to WBAY.
The incident will be investigated by the Wisconsin Department of Justice's Division of Criminal Investigation, said Lamb, who said no further information would be released Tuesday night.
In 2011, two Fond du Lac police officers were shot, one fatally, while investigating a sexual assault case in the city, according to the Journal Sentinel. The man who shot the officers was found dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound after a six-hour standoff.
