A superintendent at a western Wisconsin school district is the subject of federal charges for sex trafficking of a minor and producing child pornography.

The indictment against Daniel Peggs, 32, was revealed by the U.S. Attorney for the Western District of Wisconsin Scott Blader on Thursday.

Peggs is the superintendent of the Altoona School District, based just outside of Eau Claire.

According to the indictment, between October 2015 and May 2016, Peggs "recruited and maintained an individual knowing that the individual was a minor and would be caused to engage in a commercial sex act."

It also alleges that in December 2015, he used the same minor "to engage in sexually explicit conduct for the purpose of producing a visual depiction of the conduct" - which basically translates to using an iPhone to produce child porn.

The news release from the attorney's office says that the child involved was not a student from the Altoona School District. It's since been reported that the victim – a girl – was aged between 14 and 18 when the incidents happened.

The 32-year-old was arrested on Thursday in Altoona as he was on his way to work.

Shock among parents, colleagues

WEAU News reports that his arrest has shocked the school community, with the Altoona School Board holding an emergency at noon Thursday as news of the indictment broke.

Counseling has been offered to students, and an acting superintendent has been appointed. In the event that Peggs is released on bail, he will "immediately be placed on administrative leave and not be allowed on school property," WEAU notes.

Peggs was appointed superintendent last year, having worked in the district since 2016. Before that he was a principal at Gilman High School and was a science teacher at Chippewa Falls Middle School.

If convicted, he faces a minimum sentence of 10 years and a maximum of life imprisonment for the sex trafficking a minor charge.

Producing child porn carries a sentence of 15-30 years.
