Wisconsin teen accidentally shoots man while teasing cat with gun laser

She's charged with injury by negligent use of a weapon.

Two people — both the suspect and the victim — are facing potentially serious legal consequences after a bizarre shooting in southeastern Wisconsin.

Reports say a 19-year-old Kenosha woman was using a gun laser to play with a cat when the weapon went off, accidentally shooting the gun's owner, a 21-year-old man.

Jashanti Pleasant was charged Thursday with injury by negligent use of a weapon, two days after the incident happened in a local apartment

Per The News & Observer , the criminal complaint says Pleasant had drunk "several shots of brandy" when she picked up the weapon, “turned on the laser sight and was pointing it at the floor to get the cat to chase it.”

The gun unexpectedly fired, with a witness telling authorities that the victim "stood in shock for a moment before asking Pleasant if she just shot him," the news site says.

According to Kenosha News, police responded and found the victim in a neighboring apartment with a leg wound, applying a tourniquet before the man was taken to a local hospital.

Though he told police that he had removed the magazine from the gun, the publication notes, they found that was not the case, and now he faces charges for violating bond conditions that prohibit him from possessing a weapon, owing to an unrelated January 2020 crime in which he was involved.

The complaint noted that Pleasant described the shooting as an accident and apologized to the victim, "who said he forgave her," The State reports.

The website notes that, according to authorities, the bullet went through the man's thigh, ultimately going through a wall in the kitchen and hitting the back of a stove.

No other injuries were reported in the incident.
