Wisconsin woman drowns swimming in northern Minnesota lake

A 37-year-old woman died one day after a drowning accident in northern Minnesota over the weekend. 

According to the Cass County Sheriff's Office, the 37-year-old woman from Sheboygan, Wisconsin, was on Ponto Lake in rural Backus, Minnesota when they received a report of a possible drowning just before 4:30 p.m. Saturday. 

The woman was not breathing when she was found in the water by people in the area. It's believed that she had been swimming near the shore at the time of the incident. 

CPR and life-saving efforts were carried out at the scene and she was airlifted to a hospital in St. Cloud, where she died on Sunday. 

The victim's identity is being withheld pending notification of family members and a review by the Ramsey County Medical Examiner's Office.
