Wisconsin's Paul Ryan to step down as U.S. House Speaker next year

He won't seek re-election this November.

Paul Ryan will not seek re-election this November, meaning the U.S. House will need a new Speaker.

The Wisconsin politician, who became House Speaker in 2015, confirmed he will retire from Congress 20 years after he was first elected.

In a statement, Ryan's aide told Axios than he is "proud of all that has been accomplished and is ready to devote more of his time to being a husband and a father."

Reps. Steve Scalise and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy are considered possible candidates to replace him as Speaker, according to CNN.

President Donald Trump had paid tribute to the outgoing Ryan on Wednesday morning.

Ryan was already facing a tough re-election campaign in his Wisconsin district thanks to a challenge from Democrat Randy Bryce.

While Ryan was still favored to win, Bryce claimed he trailed by just 6 points in the polls this past December, Politico reports, and it may have closed further since.
