With Sunday's rain, 2016 is officially the wettest year on record for the Twin Cities

It was a wet one.

This year was wet.

In fact, it was the wettest year on record for the Twin Cities.

The nearly inch of rain the metro area got Sunday pushed the annual precipitation for this year past the record, the National Weather Service says. The Twin Cities has gotten 40.32 inches of precipitation this year – the previous record was 40.15 inches, set in 1911.

Annual precipitation totals include both how much rain we got, as well as the water content of the snow that's fallen this year, MPR News' Updraft blog notes. The average annual precipitation for the Twin Cities is around 30-32 inches (see map below), the Minnesota Climatology Office says.

The wettest year on record comes after the Twin Cities experienced its eighth-wettest summer (June-August), while much of the state saw near record-setting rainfalls this summer and into late September, according to the Minnesota DNR.
