Dad calls Trevino trial "gut-wrenching"

Kira Steger's father told KSTP that watching the murder trial of Jeffrey Trevino is "gut-wrenching." Jay Steger said he is confident in the prosecution, though "cross examination of the defense throws us for a loop sometimes." He said family members from Texas and Wisconsin are in St. Paul to provide support during the trial.

Trevino is charged with two counts of second-degree murder in the death of Steger back in February. A barge worker found her body in the Mississippi River in May.

The St. Paul Pioneer Press reports that Jesse Mix said that he and Trevino talked frequently about problems in the marriage Trevino and Kira Steger. According to the article, Mix testified that Trevino even waited in the Mall of America parking lot one night to watch as his wife left after work.

According to a Star Tribune report, witnesses testified that Trevino thought that friends' attempts to find his missing wife through posts on social media were being blown out of proportion.

The newspaper says one of those witnesses, a childhood friend of Steger's, Lindsey Wolf, testified that Trevino was angry and agitated and demanded that she remove a Facebook post to start a search for her friend.

Trevino's defense attorney Jon Conard claimed that Trevino didn't want Steger to have to explain the affair when she returned.

The Star Tribune says little new information was learned from Trevino and Steger's roommate, Matthew Roff, who lived in the basement of the couple's home. Roff testified that he didn't see or hear anything unusual the last day that Steger was seen alive. Roff said he saw both Steger and Trevino watching a movie that night.

KMSP TV reports that Roff said he heard no arguing, no fighting, no broken furniture that night, although Roff did admit he is a very heavy sleeper.

A video posted on YouTube by FOX 9's Paul Blume, Roff did not talk to reporters as he left the courtroom following his testimony.

Prosecutors have alleged that Trevino killed Steger because she was having an affair. The Pioneer Press reports that prosecuting attorney Andrew Johnson said there were more than 150 blood stains found in the master bedroom of the couple's home, along the baseboard, bed and on the floor.

Conard, though, spent time attacking the evidence in the case, particularly the blood evidence. He claimed there was less than a thimble of Steger's blood found in the master bedroom, yet the cut above Steger's eye would have yielded much more.

The trial is expected to last for three weeks.
