Woman, 94, found dead after apartment fire in Granite Falls

It happened on Saturday afternoon in the western Minnesota city.

An elderly women died in an apartment fire in western Minnesota over the weekend.

The Yellow Medicine County Sheriff's Office says a fire broke out at an apartment in Granite Ridge Place, in the 500 block of Skyview Drive in Granite Falls, at about 3:15 p.m. Saturday.

Fire crews were alerted by an automated smoke alarm, which brought them to the scene and saw them extinguish the fire within 20 minutes.

Responders then found the body of 94-year-old Vivian Jeseritz inside.

At this point, investigators haven't given any indication as to how the fire started.

Minnesota saw a significant drop in fire deaths in 2018, with the 37 reported last year the lowest in the state since 2009.
