A woman was severely injured when she was struck by a vehicle in New Ulm on Tuesday.

According to New Ulm Police Department, the collision happened around 7:30 a.m. when a vehicle hit Paulette Schmeling, 65, of New Ulm, at the intersection of 1st North and Garden streets.

Schmeling was transported by ambulance to New Ulm Medical Center and then airlifted to Hennepin County Medical Center in Minneapolis with what police say are severe injuries.

An investigation revealed that Schmeling was in a crosswalk when she was hit by a 73-year-old driver. Speed, alcohol and distracted-driving factors have been ruled out as a cause of the collision.

"This crash marks the 3rd vehicle vs pedestrian crash in the City of New Ulm in the past 45 days," New Ulm police said in a release, pleading with drivers to "be observant of their surroundings as they travel."

On Nov. 1, a 63-year-old man was struck by a vehicle and killed while crossing a street in New Ulm.
