A man has been arrested in Shakopee in connection with a killing that saw a woman beheaded Wednesday afternoon.
The incident was reported at 2:31 p.m. near the intersection of 4th Avenue and Spencer Street.
The victim has been identified as 55-year-old America Mafalda Thayer, of Shakopee, who was found by police on the sidewalk with stab wounds. The suspect is a 42-year-old man also from Shakopee, who is being held on suspicion of 2nd-degree murder.
An extremely graphic video that shows part of the incident has been circulating online.
Bring Me The News will not provide details of the video or link to it due to the disturbing content and out of respect for the victim, but its spread on the internet has been condemned by Shakopee Police Chief Jeff Tate.
"We are aware that a bystander took a video of this incident. We have that video. It is deeply disturbing that the first instinct was to post that on social media," Tate said in a phone call with Bring Me The News.
"This woman has a son, has a family and people that care about her and the last place anyone should find out about a tragedy involving a loved one is via social media. Thankfully we were able to apprehend this individual quickly."
"At this time, investigators believe the suspect knew the victim and this wasn’t a random act," Shakopee PD added.
Bring Me The News does not identify suspects until they have been charged with a crime.
