A motorist died Saturday in Le Sueur County when they crashed into a hole in a construction zone, according to the Minnesota State Patrol.

The wreck happened just prior to 7:45 a.m. on Hwy. 99 at Milepost 34 in Montgomery Township, with the State Patrol reporting that a 51-year-old Northfield woman was driving a 2001 Chrysler Sebring west on the highway when she "drove through the construction zone and drove into a hole in the road."

Montgomery Fire and Ambulance responded but the woman was pronounced dead at the scene.

She has been identified by the State Patrol as Michelle Dawn Burwell. The State Patrol crash report adds that Burwell was not wearing a seat belt and that alcohol was involved.

According to MnDOT, Hwy. 99 is closed for emergency repairs between T-87 and County Road 3, which is approximately four miles east of Le Center. However, it is not clear if that stretch of roadway is where the crash took place.
