Woman dies after driving off ledge as she checked out vacation cabins

She was trying to turn around on a steep driveway when she went over the edge.

A woman was killed by the shores of Lake Superior after driving her car off a ledge and getting pinned underneath it.

Cook County Sheriff's Office says the 59-year-old woman from the Twin Cities and another female passenger had been looking at vacation cabins in the 3900 area of Cascade Beach Road, just off of Hwy. 61 between Lutsen and Grand Marais.

As they attempted to turn the car around in a steep driveway at around 6:30 p.m. Monday, their vehicle went over a ledge and pinned the driver underneath.

She was pronounced dead at the scene. The passenger didn't suffer any injuries.

They had both been staying in the area with friends at another cabin, the sheriff's office said.

The identity of the woman has not been released as her family is still being informed.

She was taken to the Cook County North Shore Health Hospital.
