An investigation is being conducted by the Kandiyohi County Sheriff's Office after a woman was fatally struck by a train Wednesday.
The sheriff's office reported that it received a call about a pedestrian being struck a train around 2:15 p.m., with the reporting party informing the department that the woman was walking on the tracks east of Kandiyohi when she was hit by an eastbound BNSF train near 98th Street NE.
The victim was found dead at the scene. She has been identified as Marcy Johnson, 68, of Willmar.
The department said traffic in the area of the fatal incident was temporarily rerouted.
Nationwide, there were 2,216 vehicle-train collisions in 2019, including 293 fatalities and 807 injuries, Operation Lifesaver says.
In Minnesota, there were 46 highway-rail incidents in 2019 and the latest report from the Federal Railroad Administration shows that this is at least the second fatal train-pedestrian crash in Minnesota this year, while there have also been five non-fatal incidents involving pedestrians.
