The body of a woman who had not been seen in several days was found at her home underneath an overturned riding lawn mower.

Police have launched a death investigation after the woman was found on Sunday just before 5 p.m., at the 9400 block of Scott St. in Greenfield, Minnesota.

She was found by her neighbors, who searched her property having not heard from her for several days.

The woman's name and cause of death are expected to be released at a later stage by the Hennepin County Medical Examiner's Office.

The Hennepin County Sheriff's Office is investigating.

Lawn mower accidents are common

Lawn mowers and ride-on tractor are a common cause of injury and fatalities in the home, with MentalFloss reporting they are responsible for around 75 deaths each year in America.

As well as risk of death, there are also many instances each year of users losing limbs when getting caught in the machinery.

Children are particularly at risk given their size, with reporting that an estimated 17,000 children each year require emergency room care because of lawn mower accidents.

The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA) meanwhile has scores of workplace accidents listed on its website involving lawn mowers.

The Family Handyman has a series of safety tips for using lawnmowers, which include wearing the proper footwear, being careful on inclines, and avoiding gravel.
