A woman was killed in northern Minnesota after being struck by a vehicle as she walked along the road.
The Clearwater County Sheriff's Office first received a call at 8:19 p.m. Thursday about a woman walking along 340th Street west of the Shooting Star Casino in Bagley, near Bemidji.
The caller was concerned as the woman was "walking partially into the traffic lane," with a second caller reporting the same concerns as police were en route.
When a deputy arrived in the area, they saw a vehicle driving slowly along the street before pulling off to the side of the road.
The deputy spoke to the driver, who said they thought they'd just hit something in the road, "possibly a deer."
But he had instead hit a person later identified as 28-year-old Emily Ann Stevens, of Rice Lake, Minnesota, who was found in the roadway.
Lifesaving measures were performed and she was taken to a local hospital by ambulance, but she died shortly after arriving.
The incident remains under investigation by the Clearwater County Sheriff’s Office.
Mallory Stevens, the victim's cousin, paid tribute on Facebook: "Such a beautiful soul taken too soon please pray for our family and community rn as she touched many lives throughout Rice Lake."
