Woodbury finds out more about plans for new Costco store

Residents of Woodbury have been finding out more this week about warehouse giant Costco's plans to build a massive store in the east metro suburb.

The Pioneer Press reports the company intends to build a 164,000-square-foot store near Interstate 494, at the northeast corner of Tamarack Road and Weir Drive, which would create 150 full and part-time jobs.

This past Thursday the retailer gave those living in Woodbury the first glimpse of their plans at an open meeting, ahead of submitting the proposal to Woodbury's Planning Commission early next year.

It would be the seventh Costco store in the metro area, with the wholesale retailer having other locations in St. Louis Park, Maple Grove, Eden Prairie, Coon Rapids, Burnsville, and Maplewood.

The Woodbury Bulletin reports the store would house a tire center, food service center, liquor sales store, retail space, and a locker room for employees – as well as a 16-pump gas station and 700 parking spaces.

Their stores are not open to the public but to members who pay an annual subscription, much like Sam's Club, and the stores sell a little bit of everything, including groceries, appliances, electronics, automotive supplies, hardware, office goods and sporting goods.

Those who attended on Thursday were shown drawings of the site plans and the building elevations, as well as being able to quiz Costco officials, the Bulletin notes.

The Business Journal reports Costco had sounded out the city about its plans in the summer, submitting an environmental assessment that also highlights nearby parcels of land that could eventually be home to other retail and business developments.
