A man from Woodbury, Minnesota, died after getting into difficulty while swimming in the Gulf of Mexico on Thursday.

The Sheriff's Office in Okaloosa County, Florida, confirmed on its Facebook page that 44-year-old Ian Johnson drowned while swimming in waters near Destin, east of Pensacola.

The Star Tribune reports Johnson had been swimming with his son behind the Pelican Beach Resort, but officers were called at around 3:20 p.m when he became distressed in the water.

He was pulled unconscious from the water and lifeguards performed CPR on him, but he was pronounced dead later on at Fort Walton Beach Medical Center.

The Star Tribune said that there were not believed to be any warnings about the water conditions on Thursday.

The NWF Daily News reports that there were yellow flags flying at the time of the incident, which indicates "moderate surf," adding that Johnson was visiting the area from Minnesota with his family at the time.
