Worshipers came together at New Salem Baptist Church in north Minneapolis Saturday to remember 252 victims of violent crime in the past five years in the Twin Cities, WCCO-TV reports.

Among those at the candlelight vigil was Marsha Mayes, whose 3-year-old son, Terrell Mayes, Jr., was killed by a stray bullet Dec. 26, 2011.

"It kills me his killer is still walking this earth, Marsha Mayes told the crowd during the memorial. "I could look at someone today and not know if that's my child's killer.

KSTP-TV reports that the victims' names were read one-by-one at the emotional service.

Different preachers also spoke, including Rev. Randolph Staten of Operation Resurrection

Staten said a vicious cycle emerges from untreated grief, which turns into trauma, "and that trauma then turns to hate and that hate turns to violence."
