Wow, Facebook: Their voter registration reminder really worked

Facebook's reminder got a lot of Minnesotans to register to vote.

The Minnesota Secretary of State's Office said there were 73,478 online voter registrations in Minnesota Monday.

That's a record high, and includes new registrations as well as people updating existing registrations. The previous record had been about 27,000 online registrations in a day.

So what caused this giant, record-breaking surge?

This little thing:

Facebook sent out this reminder to Minnesotans Monday afternoon and evening. And the Secretary of State's Office said the big increase in voter registration was "likely the result" of Facebook's push.

Facebook's impact

This is at least the second time Facebook has caused a big bump in voter registration.

The Center for Election Innovation and Research dug into some numbers in the lead-up to National Voter Registration Day (which was Sept. 27).

On Sept. 23, Facebook blasted a banner to its users that included a link for online registration in 32 states and Washington DC. During the next four days, all the states that were involved saw massive increases in voter registration.

Minnesota specifically saw 7,424 registrations from Sept. 18-22 – that's before the Facebook blast – with a high of 1,963 coming on the 21st.

On Sept. 23 alone, the first day of Facebook's big alert, the state got 26,743 new voter registrations. That was followed up by days of 8,788 and 4,431.

Then on Sept. 26, Google had a Doodle telling people to register to vote. And on that day, Minnesota got 10,810 registrations, the center said.

The New York Times said, based on Facebook users demographics, the site likely prompted more young voters to register.

I still need to register to vote!

You've got until the end of Tuesday to pre-register online.

It’s pretty slick – just visit the Secretary of State’s website here. All you need is an email address and your driver’s license, state ID card number or your social security number.

If you don't get pre-registered, don't freak out – you can register on Election Day at your polling place when you go to vote. Everything you need to do that (and again, it's still pretty simple) can be found here.

Paper registration forms are available in English, Spanish, Hmong, Somali, Vietnamese, Russian, Chinese, Lao, Oromo, Khmer, Amharic, and Karen.

The Secretary of State says Minnesota has 3.2 million registered voters – yet there are still 800,000 citizens who could register, but so far have not.
