Wrong-way crash kills 1, injures 2 in Minnetonka

Police are investigating if drugs or alcohol were a factor.

One person is dead and two injured after a crash involving a wrong-way driver in Minnetonka. 

The Minnetonka Police Department released a statement about the crash, saying they were called at 10:53 p.m. Friday on a report of a vehicle driving eastbound in the westbound lanes of Hwy. 7 near Vine Hill Road. 

The wrong-way driver crashed head-on with another vehicle traveling west, while a third vehicle swerved into the ditch to avoid the wreck. 

The westbound driver was taken to Hennepin County Medical Center but did not survive their injuries.

The driver of the wrong-way vehicle was taken to the hospital and was in stable condition, and the driver of the vehicle that swerved suffered minor injuries and was treated at the scene.

Police and the Minnesota State Patrol are investigating the crash and trying to determine if alcohol or drugs were a factor. 

The identities of those involved are being withheld, although WCCO reports that the person killed was a 67-year-old woman from Excelsior and that the driver of the wrong-way vehicle was a 37-year-old Edina man.
