You can check out (and maybe even buy) Oculus Rift at Best Buy this weekend

The Oculus Rift sold out within minutes of going on sale back in March.

And if you don't already have one of the new virtual reality headsets on its way to you, it'll probably be awhile before you get one. Order online through Oculus Rift right now, and the estimated ship date is August.

But you might be able to pick one up (or at least get your hands on one) Saturday – at Best Buy.

The Richfield-based electronics store will be letting people try out Oculus Rift at 48 different locations, starting tomorrow. Only one is in Minnesota though, the Mall of America location. (They will be rolling out more demo locations throughout the summer, but no word right now if that includes more Minnesota stores.)

The company says they're the first retailer to live demo Oculus Rift (which is owned by Facebook) in stores.

In addition, Best Buy will actually have a "very limited" number of headsets available for sale at those stores, a spokesperson told BringMeTheNews. They don't have any information on when they might be available again in the future however.

How can I try it out?

Each Oculus Rift demo slot is 30 minutes, and they start in the late morning or early afternoon.

You can actually sign up ahead of time online to reserve a spot, but know that the MOA location though is booked through May 22 – if you've got time Monday, May 23 in the later afternoon, you can snag a spot. Then there are openings starting May 26 through the weekend.

There are a few walk-up opportunities too, but no guarantees.

What can you expect?

There are two demo experiences:

"Dreamdeck" puts you in "impossible places, like the top of the tallest skyscraper or alien encounters in outer space," Best Buy says (watch video of it above). While "The Climb" lets you "scale new heights" by video rock climbing.

I want one, take my money

If you're interested in buying one, you'll need at least $599.

That's the cost of the Oculus Gear VR, which comes with the headset, sensor, remote, cables, Xbox One controller, and Lucky's Tale.

But you also need a pretty powerful computer to run the software. System requirements include a minimum 8GB of RAM, an Intel Core i5-4590 processor or better, an AMD or NVIDIA video card that are generally listed at more than $240 new... so a pretty high-end rig, basically.

Here are the specific requirements.

There are competitors, such as the HTC Vive. CNET just did a comparison outlining which one they think is the better bang for your buck. And within the Oculus family is the Oculus Gear VR, which is only $99 but needs a Samsung Galaxy smartphone to operate.

It's also worth noting: There are some worries about how much data the headset collects.

Reports noted the privacy policy says the Oculus Rift software is constantly on, and information is always being collected and sent back to Facebook.

Sen. Al Franken, just days after the Oculus Rift went on sale, sent a letter to the CEO asking them to spell out exactly why they need that data, and how it's being used.
