Minnesota is one of the smartest states when it comes to how its residents tweet.

Movoto, a quirky real estate company, analyzed more than 500,000 tweets from across the country to determine the average reading level of each state.

And the results weren't that good – the entire country scored just below a fifth-grade reading level.

Minnesota did a little better than the national average, scoring a 5.316 reading level, good for the fourth-smartest state.

How it breaks down:

  1. Vermont – 5.751
  2. Wyoming – 5.506
  3. Massachusetts – 5.325
  4. Minnesota – 5.316
  5. Maine – 5.296

Although people can't be expected to spell everything correctly when they're trying to fit their thoughts into 140 characters, Movoto found some interesting correlations to state education statistics – Massachusetts, Vermont and Minnesota also scored within the top 10 of eighth-grate reading proficiency in the 2009 State of States Education study.

There are also similarities when it comes to the states with the lowest reading levels. Mississippi, Louisiana, South Carolina and Alabama were among the bottom five on Movoto's ranking, and also ranked in the bottom 10 in the State of the States Education study.

Check out how other states fared on Movoto's interactive map:
