State wildlife authorities say they have found zebra mussels, a problematic invasive species, in two lakes in central Minnesota.

The Pioneer Press reports that Cross Lake and Lower Hay Lake - two of the 14 lakes in the Whitefish chain in central Minnesota - are hosting the aquatic mollusk.

The discovery of zebra mussels, which came to Minnesota off Great Lakes cargo ships in the 1980s, in the two lakes doesn't mean they're in all the lakes in the chain, a DNR spokesman tells the paper.

Which means proper precautions could still stop the aquatic hitchhikers, and the DNR has issued a report: Check your boat bottoms before and after setting sail, and stop the spread of the pesky water snail.
