It might be a poorly kept secret come Sunday, but it looks as though former Minnesota House speaker Kurt Zellers is eyeing a gubernatorial run.

Minnesota Public Radio reports that Zellers is set to announce his 2014 political plans on Sunday. Zellers has told reporters that he’s interested in running. A check of the website, Zellersforgovernor.com, also directs people to his political page.

The station also notes that Zellers has scheduled a Sunday event in Maple Grove – the district the Republican represents in the Minnesota House.

MinnPost says other Republicans who've already announced a gubernatorial campaign are businessman Scott Honour and Hennepin County Commissioner Jeff Johnson.

Other likely Republican candidates include state Sens. Dave Thompson of Lakeville and David Hann, from Eden Prairie, according to MinnPost, while MPR reports Thompson will make an announcement on Wednesday morning.

The Star Tribune adds that the 43-year-old North Dakota native has long been involved in Minnesota politics. Zellers stepped out on his own in 2003 when he won a legislative seat in a fast-growing west suburban area. He climbed the GOP ranks to become minority leader in 2009, which positioned him to be speaker when Republicans won the chamber.

Zellers led the House for two years. But he slid from power when his GOP caucus lost its majority to Democrats in the 2012 election.

Just over the weekend, Zellers paid a very candidate-like visit to the Leinenkugel's brewery in Wisconsin.
