Pitching was the name of the game as No. 8 seed Minnesota State University - Mankato upset St. Cloud State 1-0 in 11 innings in the opening round of the NCAA Division II Central Region baseball tournament.

Minnesota State starter Dalton Roach was the story of the afternoon. Roach threw 170 pitches and tossed 11 innings of shutout baseball to lead the Mavericks to the opening round win. He struck out 12 and gave up just four hits on the afternoon.

St. Cloud State's Reese Gregory matched Roach with one scoreless frame after another. He blanked the Mavericks through 10 innings, but the Huskies made the change to Logan Spitzack in the 11th. Spitzack was tagged with the loss.

The only run of the game was scored in the top of the 11th as Chase Lonetti hit a ground ball to second base with the bases loaded and just one out.

That was enough to get the Mavericks on the scoreboard. Minnesota State will meet Arkansas-Monticello Friday evening at 5 p.m.

St. Cloud State hasn't been eliminated yet, but they'll have their backs to the wall. They will meet up with Missouri Western State in an elimination game on Friday morning at 10 a.m.

The tournament caused a bit of controversy earlier this month when Governor Mark Dayton banned MnSCU schools from traveling to North Carolina because of the state’s transgender bathroom policy. North Carolina hosts the Division II World Series.

Shortly after the announcement, the ban was lifted by the Governor allowing the teams to travel if they indeed win the Central Regional.
