A 14-year-old boy collapsed on the ice during a hockey tournament in Brainerd Friday and was later pronounced dead at a hospital, reports say.

The Brainerd Dispatch reports a paramedic who was present for the bantam game at Essentia Health Center ice arena administered aid before the boy was taken by ambulance to Essentia Health-St. Joseph's Medical Center, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful.

The game involving youth teams from Eastview and Wayzata was part of the Battle for the Blue Ox Bantam AA tournament. FOX 9 reports the player who collapsed was a member of the Eastview team.

Wayzata coach Nate Hagemo told the Star Tribune: "It was a really sad situation to witness. It was bad."

The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association issued the following statement:

The Brainerd Amateur Hockey Association Board and families are deeply saddened by the events that took place this evening. Our thoughts and prayers are with the player's family, teammates and coaches.
Our focus is on all the youth athletes and their families. In respect of this tragedy, we have decided to cancel the remainder of the Blue Ox hockey tournament.
We thank the local law enforcement and medical response teams for the care they provided.
