2002 Twins: Where are they now?

Why 2002?

Because it's the last Twins team that advanced past the first round of the American League playoffs, defeating those "Moneyball" Oakland Athletics 3-2 in the ALDS.

At least five of those former Minnesota players are making headlines this spring, albeit on other major league squads (except for one).

Here's a quick look:

Johan Santana, according to ESPN.com, had his Mets spring training debut pushed back to mid-March. Santana, 33, is battling a lower back inflammation which forced him to shut down early last year. He's due to make $25.5 million this year.

Torii Hunter, according to the BleacherReport.com, could be the "X-Factor" in Detroit's push to win the World Series this year. Hunter, 37, had a career year with the Angels in 2012, hitting .313 with 92 RBI's.

David Ortiz, according to the Boston Globe, is still recovering from a strained right Achilles tendon he suffered last year and still hasn't been cleared to play with the Red Sox this spring. Ortiz, 37, says he's "confident" he'll be in the lineup Opening Day against the Yankees.

A.J. Pierzynski, according to the Chicago Tribune, is impressing his new boss in Texas, Nolan Ryan -- who compares the prickly 36-year-old catcher to Pete Rose. "(Rose) was the least liked guy in the game, but it was because he came to play every day, came to win," Ryan said. "He was a gamer. He would do anything to help a team win. And that's what I think you get with A.J.''

Kyle Lohse, according to MLBTradeRumors.com, is still looking for a new team this spring. Lohse, 34, is coming off two solid years with the Reds, but his price tag may be too hefty right now.
