Knutson Construction, PCL Construction and Ryan Companies are among the three firms vying to design-build the new $54 million Lowertown ballpark, a spokesman for St. Paul Parks and Recreation told the Pioneer Press. The facility will replace the aging Midway Stadium and be the future home for the St. Paul Saints.

The contract was originally awarded to Minneapolis-based Ryan Cos., but a lawsuit by the Taxpayers League of Minnesota pushed St. Paul city leaders to put the contract out for bid in the interest of transparency in government.

This summer, the project was promised $25 million in state economic development grants to help pay for construction.

The 7,250-seat stadium is expected to open in 2015.
