Richard Pitino and the Gopher men's basketball team has received a verbal commitment from 4-star guard Jamal Mashburn Jr.
The Miami, Florida, native – the son of former NBA player Jamal Mashburn – picked the Gophers during an announcement on Monday. He chose the University of Minnesota over the University of California.
Mashburn Jr., a 6'0'' student-athlete at Brewster Academy in New Hampshire, is rated by 247 Sports as the 88th-best recruit in the nation in the Class of 2020, and the 10th-best combo guard.
Mashburn's father played for Rick Pitino at the University of Kentucky before going on to play 12 seasons in the NBA where he averaged 19.1 points per game. Mashburn Jr. will now play for Richard Pitino, the son of Rick Pitino.
Mashburn's evaluation from 247 Sports says he scores in traffic with a "powerful two-foot jumper" and is "more of a scorer than distributor" who is "great at creating space off the dribble."
