Just two section championship games remain to be played before the brackets to next week's boys' state hockey tournament are revealed this weekend. Six teams advanced to the state tourney Wednesday night and eight more qualified Thursday.
Final scores from Thursday:
- Delano 3, Robbinsdale Armstrong 2 (double overtime)
- Monticello 6, Pine City Area 4
- Warroad 4, East Grand Forks 0
- St. Cloud Cathedral 8, Alexandria 1
- White Bear Lake 5, Stillwater 3
- Andover 8, Elk River/Zimmerman 1
- Maple Grove 3, Blaine 0
- Lakeville South 3, Hastings 2 (overtime)
- St. Thomas Academy 2, Burnsville 0
Fun facts about Thursday's action
Here's the winning goal in double overtime by Delano's Jesse Peterson, who squeezed between Armstrong players and fired a wrist shot into the back of the net.
Andover has a great shot to land the No. 1 overall seed in the AA tournament as they finished the regular season ranked atop the Let's Play Hockey AA poll. Remember, the Andover girls won the state championship a week ago.
The end of the Monticello-Pine City game was crazy as Pine City tied the game 4-4 on a goal with 1:15 left in regulation, only to have Monticello retake the lead 14 seconds later on Huntley Hinz's goal.
St. Thomas Academy and Burnsville were locked in a 1-0 game until the Cadets scored on an empty net with 1:34 left in regulation. STA enters the state tourney as the No. 5 seed in Section 3AA tournament, where they allowed only one goal in three games.
Hastings suffered a crushing defeat as they led 2-0 midway through the third period only to see Lakeville South tie the game and force overtime on a goal with 3:26 to go. The Cougars won a goal about two minutes into the overtime period.
