After rushing for 1,940 yards and 12 touchdowns in two seasons with the Washington Football Team, Adrian Peterson has been released.

The 35-year-old being cut by Washington just over a week before the start of the regular season was first reported by NFL Network's Tom Pelissero. The team confirmed the news at 7:30 a.m. Friday.

"Ron Rivera valued Adrian Peterson’s leadership as he set the program. But with Antonio Gibson emerging and the likes of J.D. McKissic and Peyton Barber also having strong camps, there just was no role for Peterson, who intends to keep climbing the all-time rushing list elsewhere," said Pelissero

Peterson is fifth on the all-time rushing list with 14,216 yards. He's only 1,053 yards behind Barry Sanders for four in NFL history. His 111 career rushing touchdowns ranks four all time.
