After 42 year hiatus, pro bowling comes back to Minnesota

For the first time in more than four decades, the titans of tenpin are returning to Minnesota.

At least the oldies but goodies are. The Pro Bowlers Association has a tour for the over 50 set and as the Pioneer Press reports it will hold its last event of the regular season at Treasure Island in Welch later this month.

The PBA50 tour will be here August 18-21, which is a Sunday through Wednesday.

If you were in St. Paul in 1971, you might remember the last pro bowling tournament in the state.

But even if Minnesota alleys are seldom visited by the sport's elite, our bowlers have written a few pages in bowling history.

The Metro Bowler -- Minnesota's bowling newspaper -- has a page on its website looking back at some of the state's historical high points on the lanes. Included is an account of the Hamm's Beer team that came out of the Minneapolis Traveling League to win the American Bowling Congress' national tournament not once but twice. Their victories in 1970 and '72 marked the first time the same lineup won the title two times, Metro Bowler says.
